We’ve seen MLB players hit home runs thousands of times throughout the years, whether it’s as a fan in the audience or at home watching the latest commercial from Nike, Chevy, or Gatorade. In spite of how close these cameras get us to the action, there still remains a gap. We watch from every external angle as spectators of the sport, but we don’t ever truly see a game through the players’ eyes .
What if you could immerse yourself in that setting, watching the game from a 360˚ perspective, the closest a spectator could possibly be to the action? Sounds like a dream, right?
In September of 2015, Gatorade brought this dream to life.
We’ve worked with Bryce Harper more times than we can count (because we don’t know how to count past ten) — providing everything from his Washington Nationals uniform to his Under Armour gloves, shin protector, and Phiten necklace. But this was the first time (of probably many more to come) that we worked with Bryce and Gatorade on a project like this — to create a virtual reality experience.
The video above starts off in the 9th inning of a game, tied 3-3 against the Chicago Cubs. You’re on the field and see Bryce Harper warming up. Then as he steps up to the plate, you’re watching the game… through his eyes. It’s the first time content like this has been created from the baseball world, and it’s truly enthralling. You can hear Harper’s internal monologue, see how he swings from a 1st person POV, and feel the pressure build as he leads into the 2nd strike.
Gatorade and production/VFX company The Mill turned this project into a larger-than-life experience. In the video below, they present this experience to the players of the Prince George RBI team through special Oculus Rift VR headsets. Once the players finish the 360˚ Bryce Harper experience, they’ll find another surprise right in front of them — Bryce Harper himself, decked head-to-toe in his game day authentic outfit.
Sports Studio worked with closely with ad agencies TBWA Chiat Day and VML to ensure that the experience would look as authentic as possible from our end — providing Bryce Harper with the exact outfit he wears in-game down to the most meticulous details, providing the Chicago Cubs uniforms for the VR, and providing the Prince George RBI team with the Washington Nationals practice uniforms.
We’ve always made it our business and our mission to ensure the authenticity of scripted sports on-screen. From wardrobe to casting to choreography, we help make most of the best scripted sports content in the entire world. With our first venture into a VR production, we hold the same high standards for the quality of our baseball uniform rentals as we would for any other Hollywood production. See some of our work in the behind-the-scenes video and stills below.
